We would like to say a huge thank you to our Green Committee, who have done such a fantastic job over the last few months, in school and at home helping the environment. We are excited to welcome our new Green Committee and we are sure you will do an equally wonderful job of encouraging friends and family to help us in looking after the environment.
We have had a busy term on the Green School Team. We meet once a week with Ms. Stafford and Ms. Devlin to discuss ways we can help the environment at school and at home and how we can encourage our friends and family to help us. Our theme has been water, as we have had so much rain recently we decided to recycle the rain water from the school water butt and use the water to water plants instead of using water from the tap.
We are really proud of our Green School achievements. We now have four Green Flags; Recycling Flag, Energy Flag, Water Flag and Travel Flag.
Remember we can help the environment at school and at home by saving water, turning off electrical appliances, walking to school or sharing lifts and recycling. We have lots of recycling areas in the school, if you have any old mobile phones, batteries, or stamps lying around the house send them into the school and we will recycle them.
We are so proud of our Travel Flag!!!

Christmas recycling
Christmas is a great time for recycling!!!! There is always lots of extra packaging, particularly in the home. Did you know that packaging increases by 25% over the Christmas period? Much of this packaging is recyclable so make sure you have a green Christmas and recycle the extra packaging that is found around your house. You can recycle lots of clean rubbish including used wrapping paper, glass bottles, foil trays and Christmas trees. Look at the repak website to find your nearest bottle bank and also find out the Christmas opening hours of your local recycling centres.
. Scoil Oilibheir Naofa is a very green friendly place to be. From its establishment we have been involved in many activities and projects. As a result we have successfully been awarded a recycling flag, an energy flag and our third flag a water flag. These reflect our constant and on-going campaign respecting our environment and protecting our world for the future. We are currently engaged in curriculum work based on travel with a focus on healthy methods of travelling, health issues, car pooling and road safety. Our action plan is currently underway. We engaged in a Walkability Audit in April, we dusted off our runners and are getting fit as we step into summer!
Busy Planting
In the summer term, we were very busy making our school garden green and planting lots of plants and vegetables. Take a look at these photographs.
Our Walkability Audit
Sandra joined us on our Walkability Audit Event on the 11th of April.
We wore our high visability jackets. Be safe. Be seen!
The traffic lights change every 14 seconds. We waited for the green man before we crossed the busy road.
Look at the slí na sláinte sign. We will have healthy hearts by walking.
We found litter. This is not good. Where are the litter bins?
This railing keeps us safe. This footpath is smooth and wide. There is no litter here. We give this part of our walking route a thumbs up!
We enjoyed learning about suitable walking routes in our area. We discussed good and bad points about different routes.
Healthy Eating
We have been trying to eat healthily in school. Junior Infants have been looking at healthy and unhealthy lunches and they have been deciding what to pack in their lunch box. Yum Yum.
Healthy Lunches
An Unhealthy Lunch
Look at our ‘golden boots’. Lots of classes were awarded with these boots for making more environmental choices when travelling to and from school.
We are getting ready for our Walkability Audit….
Spring is here and the children have been planting bulbs. Our school garden is also looking very well.
Look at all the different kinds of bulbs we planted…
