During the month of March the children in Sonas will be working on matching and sorting in their maths lessons.

Maths Language – Here is the vocabulary that the children will be learning:

Show me, find, colour, match, goes with, more, the same as, different, join, pick out, choose, together,  belongs,

Practical games and activities – Here are some games to play at home:

-Have your child help when matching socks.

-Your child can help you to put away the cutlery after dinner-time. They can help to sort the spoons, knives and forks.

-Your child can help to sort their toys when tidying up. They can sort them into colours or types of toy.

Problem solving

When pairing a number of socks, remove one sock and make a game of having your child find out which sock is missing.
During the month of February the children in Loughcrew children will be working on addition in their maths lessons.

Maths Language – Here is the vocabulary that the children will be learning:

Altogether, makes, the same as, how many?, total, equals, and, add, set.

Practical games and activities – Here are some games to play at home:

  • Play board games using dice e.g. snakes and ladders.
  • Roll two dice. Count how many dots there are altogether. Take that amount of lego blocks. After three goes, each player counts their lego blocks. The player with the most dots wins.
  • Everyday counting activities e.g. setting the table-how many knives are there? How many forks? Etc. How many are there altogether?
  • Singing songs e.g. ten green bottles, five little ducks went swimming, five little speckled frogs.

Problem solving

Incorporate problem solving into everyday activities e.g. Count how many people are having dinner. Set the table for that many people.

Everyone in the family has to get two sweets. How many sweets do we need?

During the month of January  children in Loughcrew  are learning about number in their maths lessons. We are focusing on learning about the order of numbers.

Maths Language – Here is the vocabulary that the children are learning:

  • One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.

Missing number, What number comes before/after?, more than, less than, the same as, equal, how many more to make…? how many less? What number comes next?

Practical games and activities  – Here are some games to play at home:

-Making simple number jigsaws.

-Playing connect the dots games.

-Create a maze of numbers and see if your child can drive a toy car through it.

-Use the words before and after as part of your general day. For example discuss with your child what you are going to do AFTER dinner and what they do BEFORE going to bed.

-Simple countdowns will help for ordering numbers in reverse.

Problem Solving

Play games using a number jigsaw.

Remove a number and have your child tell you what number it is.

Only give your child one piece of the jig-saw and have them tell you what pieces they need to put either side of it.

During the month of December   children in Loughcrew  will be learning about number and pattern in their maths lessons.
