Junior Infants Maths

Junior Infants

During the month of October Junior Infant children will be learning about comparing and ordering and patterns in their maths lessons.

Maths LanguageHere is the vocabulary that the children will be learning:

Comparing and ordering- bigger than, heavier than, lighter than, taller than, shorter than, wider then, thicker than, longer than

Patterns- order, next, before, after, last, bigger, biggest, smaller, smallest, longer, longest, taller, tallest, shorter, shortest, more, less, the same, most

Practical games and activities:

The children are learning to compare two objects on the basis of the attributes of each object, e.g. one is longer but the other is longer, one is heavy but the other is heavier.

Talk and discussion:

Use concrete materials (pairs) to instigate a discussion about comparisons (scarves, shirts, coats, trousers, cups, toy animals, building block, plates, bowls etc.) Discuss these pairs. Are they the same? What is different> What is the same?

Comparing member in the family; who is taller/shorter. Remember to always use full sentences. ____ is taller than ____.

Patterns;

-Using blocks/cars/crayons etc. place one item on the table, a red car for example. Your child places another object with the same attribute beside it, a yellow car. You place another red object down and then your child places a yellow object. You have created a colour pattern.

Hands on activities:

– Using lego/building block allow your child to pick one piece and describe it. Then they must find another piece that is thicker, bigger, heavier, smaller etc. and describe it.

-Have a box of items, your child picks two items, they must describe the differences/similarities between them.

Patterns;

-Making necklaces; while placing the beads on the chain remember to create a pattern either by shape or colour.

-Colouring a pattern

Game:

-I spy; I spy with my little eye something that is bigger/smaller than _____.

During the month of September   Junior Infant children will be learning about matching & classifying in their maths lessons.

Maths LanguageHere is the vocabulary that the children will be learning:

Same, different, belongs, does not belong, goes with, join, match, belong, set, sort, group, draw, correct, wrong, blue, red, yellow, green, partner, pair, choose, together, how many? how many are left? big, bigger, small, smaller, tall, taller, short, shorter, row, pair.

Practical games and activities:

Talk and discussion:

Involve your child in discussion about matching identical objects. Use the words same and different. Encourage the children to use these words in their response. Questions could include;

  • What things around the house are the same? (use the word different also)
  • What colours can you see? Can you see red anywhere? Can you see a different colour? Where can you see the same colour?

Hands on activities:

-Matching socks

-Use a big box of any set of items (set of animals, cars, balls, furry toys etc.) Your child must choose an item and describe its attributes. For example, if your child chooses an item from a set of furry toys, the attributes could be that it’s soft, blue, small, squishy etc.

-Choose two items- a banana and a lemon for example. How are these items the same? How are the different. This activity can be used for a variety of objects.

Game:

-I spy with my little eye something _____ (colour)

-Cards; pairs

-What am I thinking? – You need an array of objects, e.g. pegs. You begin to sort he pegs. Your child needs to guess what criteria you are using to sort them. Are you sorting for colour, size, shape, material? Allow your child to sort the objects and you must guess.

Maths Activities

3d shape

Encourage your child to identify shapes in the world around us, for example; Can you see any spheres around us?  (a football being a sphere shape, an icecream cone, a dice being a cube shape…)

Pattern

Orally you can say a pattern, for example, blue, green, purple, blue, green, purple. Ask your child to say what comes next. Go on a pattern walk around the house. Your child could identify patterns in curtains, carpets, paving outside.

During the month of April the children will be learning about capacity.

Use of household items as informal units of measurement, e.g eggcups, yogurt cartons, plastic cups, mugs and jugs.

Rhymes linked with capacity

Jack and Jill went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water.
Jack fell down and broke his crown,
And Jill came tumbling after.
